Hi Mary Ann and Jake!
William Moore Karnes was my ggGrandfather. His first wife was Letitia Clayton, and the second was Alice Smith ( no relation to Charles, etc.). My father, Harold Ralph Smith, is the son of Charles Clayton Smith, who is the son of Charles W. Smith. Charles W. Smith was Ada Karnes first husband. Ada Karnes is William M. Karnes' daughter. Charles W. Smith died young, while Ada was expecting Charles C. Smith. Charles C. Smith was raised by a farmer named Stephen Ward in Paducah, KY. I have a photocopy of a page from “The History of Kentucky”
1922, Vol. IV, Judge Charles Kerr, ed.
Pages 391-392. It has detailed info about the Karnes of Paducah,KY and Equality, Illinois. Wiiliam M. Karnes and his sons were prominant builders in Paducah. From the photocopy:
"Among other contracts he held were the erections of the Carnegie Library, the Methodist Church Building, the Guthrie Block, several schools, and in fact, was connected with considerable of the building operations of Paducah."
Try Googling "Broadway Methodist"+Paducah. Also, I believe William Moore Karnes was in the 73rd Illinois Infantry, Company K. He was in many major battles, including Chickamauga. He was with Sherman's March, but was sent back. I have more, too much for a post.
I would love to share and trade info with you both.
Brian Smith
