I have a friend in Germany who says the name means Church.In North east Germany on the map is a town named Kappelan. I know of a whole group of Kappel's in ohio etc. they came over before the civil War mine settled in Iowa and surrounding states in about 1880. time frame. The other Kappels came over from southern Germany and some from a surounding country
My family came over from Staplemore, Veener,Leer, and BellingwoldeHolland.
