How can you trace roots to Poland? You need to locate a precise place of birth in "old country" among US documents.
Did they come thru Ellis Island? www.ellisislandrecords.org or Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia? The manifest should have a place of birth. Was your ancestor naturalized citizen, had social security numbers? http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Any draft registration form, state marriage application, church marriage record?
Few sites to familiarize yourself with research in Poland:

www.rootsweb.com/~polwgw/index.html
www.pgsa.org
To hear your surname pronounce:
http://say.expresssivo.com
In 1990 census of names there were 30012 KALINOWSKIs and 12 MONKOs in Poland. www.herby.com.pl in Polish and only distribution.
Recent distribution of Kalinowski:
