William Kail - Tuscarawas OH - Rifle

Hello,
I have a rifle that may be of interest to Kail surname researchers.

We are Ebay Trade Assistants, and we list the items that clients bring to us. A recent client brought us a rifle, that we are currently researching. The client continued to follow up on some research she already had going.

The rife has 'Wm. Kail' engraved in the metal of the gun in a couple of places - this is done in somewhat fancy cursive writing, and by hand.

A researcher that our client had working on the rifle has told us the following:
"The maker appears to be William Kail. According to Don Hutslar in Ohio Gunsmiths & Allied Tradesman - William Kail was born in 1825 and lived near Gilmore, Clay Twp., Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He owned and operated a little corn
cracker and sawmill on Watson Creek. His name is not that recognizable so wouldn't neccessarily bring a large
sum of money.

The rifle has the remains of what is commonly referred to as a, "Half Stock." This means that the stock came to half way out the barrel. The lock is percussion, which tells me that it was either converted from flint or was built well after the "Golden Age" of the longrifle. Probably the latter. My best guess is, based on Kail's DOB, the gun was
built after 1840, probably 1845 or so. The remaining wood is well preserved. It appears to be a higher quality piece of wood as well. The furniture has been fitted neatly and the
architecture flows. It's unfortunate the rest of the stock is missing."

*I don't know why this researcher is so sure that this is the right William Kail that made this rifle, but this is what he believes the history of this gun to be.

As a fellow genealogist, I just couldn't list this rifle without letting the Kail researchers know it's out here.

If anybody is interested, please email me at crcm66@gmail.com
Thanks,
Christi
