Origin of KAHL Family

I don't think all Kahls can trace their lineage to Prussia.I've been trying to trace my lineage since my grandparents died. What throws off everything is when my ancestors moved from Ireland to the U.S. -- though we may have the same last name in the U.S., the originations may have changed along the line. The original spelling before ancestors changed it was Cahill. Then, after migrating to a different part of Ireland, they changed it to Kahill.Once they came to the U.S., it was shortened to Kahl.
The crazy things I learn from talking to my grandparents, both first U.S. born people of Irish families!
In tracing history, consider that family may have changed the spelling of the name along the way.
