from The Kagarise Descendants

John B. Kagarise was a born mechanic, very dexterous in working with both wood and iron, and it is said of him that he could make most anything out of either. Never did a piece of machinery come to the Kagaris home but son John B. would get busy and tear it apart that he might have the fun of reassembling it. The story goes that the old grandfather clock had many rude attacks.

After Mary Ann Kagarise-Koonrod left for the West and settled in IL, she kept writing back about the possibilities of that state and later two sons of Daniel B. Kagarise, Samuel [hand-editted to read Emanuel] and Daniel, Jr., who were fine mechanics, answered pleadings of their Aunt Mary Ann and made the long journey to erect a home for her. After their return to PA they had so much to tell of the "new country" that John B. Kagarise later moved to IL and settled in Buda, which consisted of a few stores and homes at the "Cross Roads," as they were called at that time. John B. Kagarise added to the little town by putting in a blacksmith and wood-work shop. His business prospered from the start and he was not long in inducing his brother Samuel B. Kagarise to leave PA and come out to join him in the shop. Samuel B. was a fine craftsman working with wood, but under the tutorage of his brother John he soon learned to make most anything out of iron.

As the years passed John B. Kagarise longed for a home in the country and to see things grow. He sold his interest in the shop to his brother Samuel, purchased a farm near Buda and began to develop it. Today that is one of the best farms in IL. He died in 1878 and was buried at Salemville, Penna. His wife Margaret Enscoe-Kagarise, lived on the farm until her death in 1882 and whe is buried in Bunker Hill Cemetery, which is located on one corner of the farm.

The descendants of John B. Kagarise are scattered over IL, Iowa, Nebraska, and all the U.S. In this family I find may real live wires and we will learn much of the achievements of this family thru the work of Jacob E. Carper, Buda, IL; John I. Carper, 449 Cloverdale Ave., Los Angeles, Calif.; Mary J. Spencer, 411 East Maywood Ave., Peoria, Ill., and John W. Kagarise, Ida Grove, Iowa, and others.

EARLY HISTORY

Three brothers, married or single, came to America about 1805, or possibly a few years later, and settled in PA. Most German immigrants, when they settled in PA, made their way thru the forest westward beyond where William Penn and his followers had settled around Philadelphia.

The names of these three German brothers were Peter Kegerreis, who settled where Lancaster County is now on the map; Henry Kegerreis, further west where Lebanon and Douphin[sp] Counties are located; and Jacob Kegerreis and his wife Barbara Burger Kegerreis, moved on further west beyond the Susquehanna River into the mountains of Franklin and Fulton Counties, and finally a hundred miles further west into Bedford County and settle on Clear-Ridge. Here Jacob and Barbara reared their family of Thirteen children. Jacob and Barbara are buried on the old farm in a little burial plot in the orchard. This farm is on Shaffer Creek, near Clearville, Bedford Co., and is now known as the Pittman farm. The old farm house that was built by Jacob Kagarise nearly a century ago is still standing and in fair condition.

SPELLING OF THE NAME KEGERREIS

The name was spelled Kegerreis in German. However, after landing in this country Jacob left his brothers and drifted further west up into the Alleghanies[sp], where the Scotch-Irish were settling. The work of building roads, canals, and later railroads, were requiring many pick and shovel adepts, and stone masons. This brought job seekers of all nationalities to work side by side. The Scotch-Irish, who were witty, even sarcastic, enjoyed a good laugh. The name K-e-g-e-r-r-e-i-s was too Dutch for the shrewd, comical, smart, and having-the-last-word Scotch-Irish. So Jacob, or a near friend, made up the word KAGARISE composed of English letters, and, when pronounced, sounds like the Dutch or German in the original. In this manner he outwitted the fun makers, and the word does not have the "Dutch as sauer kraut" flavor and accent. You would be surprised to see a list of the different ways the name is spelled by your kinsmen all over the country. We have found it spelled at least ten different ways. Even the person who chiseled the name on the monument ran out of work space and had to shorten the name to Kagrise.
German--Kegerreis; American--Kagarise. Both words pronounced the same.
In Latin and in German the vowel e, when long, is pronounced a (long). The first e in Kegerreis, the word is as "Dutch as sauer kraut," is ong by position, being placed before the hard sound of G, a single consonant; hence pronounced a. The second e in the word is also pronounced a, because it is followed by two consonants rr. The third e is joined with i making a dipthong ei and pronounced i. Example "Tramrei," the name of a piece of music.

Hi, my name is Douglas Deffenbaugh descendant of Daniel David Deffenbaugh son of Adam Dieffenbach and Nancy Matern of Blair County, Pa. I do believe he was registered in the 1850 Blair county census. Is this one in same person? Let me know. Daniel moved to Illinois and I do believe was a child of four. Hausdieffenbach@Hotmail.com

http://genforum.genealogy.com/dieffenbach/messages/50.html Douglas, We are the family who have Adam Defenbaugh married to Nancy Munteer. He was born 1817 in Blair Co Penn. And died Mar. 1865. Let me know if this is yours also. Janet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://genforum.genealogy.com/dieffenbach/messages/51.html Janet, thank you for responding. I do believe so I have consulted with my cousin who has most of the information. I thought her name was Nancy Mattern. Originally the death certificate of our great grandfather Daniel David Deffenbaugh was Abraham Deffenbaugh. And his wife was Nancy Mattern of the same Blair/Bedford county same time frame. A specialist helping us came up with Adam and a Nancy M. . Daniel left that area of Penn. and moved and died around the Peoria, Illinois area. We live northwest of that area now. It could be there is a mispelling or wrong last name with Nancy or Adam/Abraham the county and time frame are the same era. Adam/Abraham's kids were Daniel, and I think there was a William I am not totally sure of the siblings I hope this helpful. DJD
If you live in Illinois have you been to the Deffenbaugh cemetary? Or the museum. I am told it is something really cool. Our Adam's father was Jacob. We come from Adam's son Thomas who was married to Barbara Issco Kagarise. I just wanted to say welcome and happy hunting.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/dieffenbach/messages/53.html
Hi Janet, we live in the Moline/Milan area of the Illinois bordering Davenport/Bettendorf, Iowa along the Mississippi River. No, I have not been to the Deffenbaugh cemetary, I did not know there was one. Where is it? The name Thomas comes to mind it seem that one of my grandfather's brothers name was Thomas, I know one was named John and a sister named Cora. My grandfathers name was William I thought Thomas Deffenbaugh. I know with some of our research some of the things I look for is siblings names, sometimes I have found that the childrens names are the parent's siblings names. So when you mentioned Thomas I am trying to recall if their was a sibling or brother named Thomas. I don't know for sure what Adam's fathers name was like I said earlier Daniel David Deffenbaughs death certificate say's that his father's name was Abraham but we find no Abraham that had kids much less married to a Nancy M. or in the Pennsylvania Census. So, if Daniel David Deffenbaugh came from Blair/Bedford county in that time frame who was his dad if not Abraham? Could Adam's middle name be Abraham? Do you know? Maybe Adam went by both names. You do know there was shifting of county lines back around that time frame too. I can't remember which ones but I do believe it was Blair/Bedford or Blair and a county with the first letter "F". Write back this helps, Thanks, DJD
Douglas, Do we know you? Who are your parents? Do you know Lynn or Dick or Christine? We are all Defenbaugh cousins and have been doing this together for almost a year. Dick and the rest have been at it longer than me. I have seen Adam referred to as Abraham but can't remember where. His wife's name was Nancy (Jane?) Munteer, we aren't too sure about the middle name. I am from Davenport, my great-grandfather Robert died in 1986. E-mail me at janeth@tcfs.com
I also have Adam Defibaugh/Defenbaugh in my husbands family tree, he was his gggrandfather. I have his death as March 1865 in Blair Co. He is the son of Jacob and Barbara Defenbaugh. I have sent for his Civil War records. I don't have a birthdate or age for him but I have his wife listed as Nancy Munteer, this info from Charles Martin Deffenbaughs death certificate. I am trying to find more info about him, so far I have him born in Bedford, Somerset and Germany, how do I know which is correct
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://genforum.genealogy.com/defibaugh/messages/71.html
Sara, please let me know if you get his civil war records. Cousin Dick just recently got a copy of Thomas' pension request. The info it contained was facinating and the best part is it verified everything we had found so far. Let me know if you would like me to forward that info to you or you can email Dick, since he is the one who found it. Janet

Janet, I received the Civil War papers for Adam Deafenbaugh. There wasn't much in them unfortunately. He mustered in at age 44 Aug. 28, 1861 in Frankstown and mustered out Nov. 28, 1864 at Harrisburg. He was a Private with Capt. Hicks', Co C 76 PA Infantry. There is no physical description or any other info that we don't already know.
I was in contact with Dick when I got these and we have found there are at least two seperate Adam's in Blair Co at the same time. I haven't worked on this line lately but will be starting to hunt again soon. I have ordered Adams Pension papers but haven't heard anything yet.

Janet,
I am interested in what information you have on Adam Defibaugh. Yes, he is the son of Jacob Defibaugh, born 1760 in Pennsylvania (probably in Bedford County), died 1832 in Bedford County, PA. Adam's mother is Barbara Dibert, the daughter of Michael Dibert and Magaret Miller. She was born and died in Bedford County, PA, but I don't have those dates. I posted this family and their ancestors on genforum. You can e-mail me at bumba@lcc.net. Again, I would very much like the information on Adam Defibaugh. He is a "blank spot" in my family research. Many thanks, Scott

Hello, welcome to the hunt! I have sent your query to my other cousins. They have been working on this longer than I. I looked at the records that I have and couldn't find his name listed. Our branch comes from Jacob Defibaugh\Defenbaugh who immigrated from Germany sometime before 1817.
Hopefully we'll be able to find a connection.
Happy hunting! Janet

Our Jacob wasn't born until 1760 and died 1832, but I was thinking your Jacob could possibly be a brother to Kasper Tiefenbach. Kasper is our Jacob's grandfather. By the 1900's our line was spelled Definbaugh, but we have connections to many spellings. Let me know if you can see any connection. Janet
