I did some research a few years ago and traced my paternal line back to Devon.
This came as a huge surprise to my father who up till that point considered himself to be a proud Yorkshire man.
If you are interested I will ask him to forward all the details to you but basically a one Samuel Jury moved to Huddersfield 5 generations ago.
On his marriage certificate to Eliza Stancliffe, one of the witnesses is his father, James Jury of Thrushelton Devon. This village is about 10 miles south of Torrington. After doing a little more research James, who was christened in 1817 in Hatherleigh (4 miles East of Torrington) had a father called John Jury.
Here the trail splits as there were two John Jury’s (actually one was John Juery but name spelling as you know was not that exact), in Hatherliegh at the time. One was christened in 1801 and the other 1802 which would make them approximately 15 or 16 when they fathered James, which is not uncommon. Their fathers were William and John respectively.
This John was christened in Black Torrington in 1779.
Since Samuel the male line continued through Walter, then Edward Walter, next Brian Walter, then Jan Denker (that’s me, with a German male name), my bother Carl and finally Lukas, my son.
My familiy are in Devon at the moment on holiday and on Saturday we will visit Thrushelton Chruch, where in the porch there is a cart wheel responsible for the death of a great great…..uncle of mine Valentine in the 1750’s (I think).
Hope this helps.
Please mail me if you would like, after all I guess you are a distant relative.
Best regards
Jan
