Alfred P. Judd is my husband's great grandfather and James R. [Robert] is his grandfather. Alfred's father Thomas appears in the census in 1820 in Chagrin, CuyohogaCounty, Ohio, then appears in the 1840 and 1850 census in Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio [he died in 1851].
Per Sylvester Judd's book, Thomas Judd and His Descendants p. 30,Alfred lived in Willoughby,Lake County, Ohio in 1851 (he was approximately 19 years old in 1851).
I have printed copies of all my census research and the various birth/death certificates where mentioned. When I have unverified information or if it comes from someone else who hasn't given me verification references I indicate that as well.
US Census 1910, Soundex T1272 180, Clermont County, New Richmond, Ohio Alfred Judd appears with his wife Eliza F. and their daughter Corda L. born in Kentucky. At the time of this census Corda is approximately 29 years old.
US Census 1880, Bracken County, KentuckyA.P. Judd appears with Eliza (wife) Children: Albert, Samuel, James R., Ida, Hobey, and Codey.
US Census 1870, M653 Rol 357 Vol. 3 (Line 29-36) Bracken County, Berlin Precinct, Kentucky Alfred (the census taker spelled it "Alford") Judd appears with his wife Eliza, Children A.P., Albert, S.E., James R., Isa and Ida F.He is listed as a farmer with $2,500 value of real estate and $600 value of personal property. [S.E. is Samuel]
US Census 1860, M653 Roll 357 Vol. 3 (1-390 line 21) Brackern CountyAlfred Judd appears with his wife Eliza, Children Arthur and Albert P. with $512 value of real estate and $300 value of personal property.
Death certificate for (E)Liza F. Judd, #39584 Hamilton County, Miami Township Reg. Dist. 492, File no. 23 Primary Reg. Dist. #4742. Birthplace: Kentucky. Reporter of the information A.P. Judd address Addystern, [Ohio] Registrar A.R. Robinson, July 5, 1917. This is cross reference with a social security record.
Family rumor has it that Eliza was Native American but I have found no proof as it states her race on the death certificate as "white". I haven't found a great deal of information regarding her to date.
Compiler's note:
A.P. Judd owned a dry goods store in Smith's Landing, Ohio, about 1893 [in Clermont County]. This is known, as James Robert Judd wrote a letter to Mattie Perkins just prior to their marriage on the store stationery.Compiler has this original letter.
The misspelling of Alfred's name in the 1850 census can easily be accounted for based on the way the name was pronounced at the time and the accent of the census taker or the census reporter.
Alfred's father [Thomas 1781-1851] was born in Ohio and his grandfather [Thomas 1744-1820] was born in Connecticut.
Hope this helps. I visit the National Archives regularly since its a metro stop away from where I work but I don't always have myself as organized as I might and I get distracted by other details that I might encounter.
