I am descended from Ratcliff Joell, who was born in Norfolk, VA in 1738.His baptismal certificate and his parents' marriage certificate can be found in the LDS library in Salt Lake City. Ratcliff's parents were Richard Joell and Michal Miller. That Richard Joell's father,Ratcliff's grandfather, was Capt Richard Joell who fled a lawsuit in Bermuda in 1731, coming to Virginia.Capt. Richard died in 1734 and his Will recites his five children, which are shown correctly in the Genealogy Forum. In his Will, he leaves to his three daughters, certain Virginia land which had been purchased by his father Capt. William Joell (died 1719).So in this Will we get information on three generations.
What I did not know was that Capt. Richard had two wives. The tax records after his death show his widow, Rebecca, paying taxes on the same property as is found 1731-1733 in Richard's name.Obviously the maiden name of Capt Richard's first wife, and Ratcliff's grandmother, is the source of the Ratcliff name.
The court records in Norfolk also show a partition action brought by some of Capt Richard's two adult daughters in 1744 against Hannah who was still unmarried and a minor. The purpose of the suit was to obtain a court order to allow the property to be sold since Hannah was a minor and could not sign a deed.
Could you tell me the source of information on Capt Richard's first wife, Mary Ratcliff Newman? My family has used Ratcliff, although spelled Radcliff, for at least five sucessive generations, so tracking the origin of the name is important and something we have never done.
