Richard JOELL. Born About 1600 in England. Died About 1666/1668 in Bermuda. Occupation farmer, church reader, schoolteacher. 1627: Richard JOELL signed letter to the Adventurers of the Somers Islands Company (Memorials of Bermudas Vol I p.435) Assizes of June 1639: Mr Richard JOELL bound over for drunkeness confessed his fault with many sorrowfull expressions: was censured upon the next misdemeaor in the like kind to be ipso facto discharged of his place of Reading in the Church & thereupon to be bound to the good behavior. (A very light sentance compared to others at that time.) Richard Joell mentioned in his role of schoolteacher in Nathaniel White's book "Truth gloriously appearing from under the sad and sable Cloud of Obloquie" printed in London in 1645. December 1653 Assize: Richard Jones was sentanced to pay 900 lbs of tobacco for the support of an illegitimate child & both parents acknowledged their guilt. Possible that this Jones was actually Joell & that the child was William (who was believed to have been born 1650 to 1655). Compared to other punishments meted out for this same offense, a mere fine was unusually light. Listed, as Richard Jones, on Norwood's 1663 survey as occupant of 3 shares of Devonshire land belonging to the "Earle of Devonshire (formerly William Lord Cavendish)", part of the 10 share parce l(# 9) containing the church & the church yard. The south side of this parcel borders Crow Lane and is the present location of the town of Hamilton. New parish reader appointed in 1666, so it is assumed that Richard Joell died soon thereafter. He married Sarah?. Surname unknown & this given name is a wild guess.
