The chart posted above is only a guess of how the first William Joell fits into the Bermuda Joell line. There is no documetation of either William's birthdate nor his parents. Most Joell researchers say he was the child of Richard & Bridget, based on the mention in William's 1714 will of Mrs Bridget Joell -- by reading the word before her name as "mother." I believe, however, that the word is "another." Still, it is possible that William was a son by an unknown first wife, and that Richard was actually born before the 1645/48 birthdate I have listed.
The lack of early Bermuda birth records is a given. But two other items need to be taken into consideration: 1) several mentions of Richard Jones in the early records that I believe should be Richard Joell, and 2) the apparent custom of late marriages by mariners. Normally, a researcher would suppose 4 generations per 100 years, based on couples marrying in their early 20s. But, unlike farmers or merchants, mariners spent their early manhood on the sea and this fact appears to have hampered the likelihood of courtship in their early 20s. I suspect that mariners married & began producing offspring much later.
There are several mentions of Richard Joell & Richard Jones in the early records that I find curious, namely the light sentences they received for drunkeness & siring a bastard. In fact, I suspect that Richard Jones who sired a bastard child in 1653 may be Richard Joell (the immigrant) & the bastard could be our William.
