Sue--
It's entirely possible that Walter was 1/2 Spanish. I've never been to Bermuda myself, but I'm told that all the Joells there are light brown. I believe the pure white line has just about died out.
On the Bermuda website are posted what Joell wills I have & some of them give names of family slaves; however all are dated in the 1700s. Also on the Bermuda site under "Bermuda Gazette" on 12 Feburary 1835 is a list of Joell households and the number of slaves in each. Unfortunately, they are not named (surely there are records with names in Bermuda Archives).
Please feel free to write to me directly with any questions. Also I could send you a brief chart of the white Joell line that remained in Bermuda, which might help if you do some research at the archives. -- Mitchell
