My ancestors go back to Andreas Jostad (1827-1903) and Lisa Bergum Jostad (1836-1913). Andreas and Lisa were married in Norway in 1853 and immigrated to the US in 1857. They came from the area near Biri, which is a small town on the western side of Lake Myosa. Lisa's parents, Lars and Marie Bergum came, too. They settled in a narrow valley east of Holmen, Wisconsin, which became known as Jostad Coulee. Their son Olaus (Oliver) 11/28/1853-2/23/1889. He fathered Anton, Mary and Adolph. Adolph, my grandfather, married Hilma Severson. She bore Ole, and then died shortly after giving birth to my father, Helmer (6/15/1918-1/10/2000).
