Hello Maureen,
Interesting.I have always planned to try to trace the Jose's back through time, but never found the time to get around to it, or the patience to do it.So I cannot go back beyond the things I have related in my earlier e-mail.We may well be related, because after all it had to start somewhere. It's nice that you will be going to Cornwall early next year, I haven't been across the Atlantic since my mother died 26 years ago.
As for Essex and Devon, there was a big story in the Independent, the weekly paper published in Plymouth, Devon on July 2, 2006 about a Cyril Jose who fought in World War One when he was only 17, but survived and died in 1983.Growing up in Falmouth I know that there was another family of Jose's in town, that as far as we knew were not related. In travelling around Cornwall I also met people called Jose in the far west of Cornwall, particularly in the town of St. Just West, near Lands End.
Obviously I am very interested in your research and wish you well when you get to Cornwall. If you have never been you will love it, but make sure you are well dressed because it's a damp cold.
