Laurinda Jordan
In the old graveyard near Brownsville there is a sandstone marker with the inscription, "In memory of Laurinda Jordan, wife of John P. Jordan who Departed This Life on the 24 February, 1831, aged 22 yr."
This is in what is believed to be the family graveyard of Col. Richard Nixon but this is the only marker left in the pasture.A small perhaps footstone was also found with LMBJ, 1831 inscribed on that.
Some say she was the granddaughter of Col Nixon's second wife, Mary Pugh Jordan; others that it's more probable that she is the wife of Mrs. Nixon's son by her first marriage, John Jordan, a Methodist minister.
We are interested in learning more on this as Col Nixon was the first settler of our Haywood Co., Tn. The marker is believed to be one of the oldest in the county.
We have some Jordan informationand will share.
