2) Who was Thomas Jordan's father?
I posted most of the following, in message #10758 and following. I have updated some of the information presented here.
AP&P (4th ed, v2) includes a good article on Thomas Jordan (sr) family.
In this case, no background is supplied, to attach Thomas (jr) or Margaret, to Thomas (sr).
So following is my own analysis.
List of sources:
1) 1623/24 List of Living:
Thomas Jordan - at the Maine
2) 1624/25 Muster:
Thomas Jorden - at Pasbehaighs; age 24, arrived on Diana
3) "Colonial Virginia Register"
Thomas Jordan - House of Burgesses, 1629, 1632 (representing Warrasquioake)
4) "Early Quaker Records in Virginia", p42
son Thomas (jr) b 1634 (later, of Chuckatuck)
5) C&P, v1, p27
Thomas Jordan - land grant, Warrasquioake, 2 Jul 1635
6) "Early Quaker Records in Virginia", p8
dau Margaret, m: James Davis, by 1687
7) C&P, v1, p76
dec'd by Nov 1637 (record states "Thomas Jorden lately lived upon" land on Warwicksquike R, IoW co)
No one has contested an implied meaning, that he died by then.
8) C&P, v1, p163
dec'd by Aug 1644 (record states "Thomas Jordan, dec'd")
We have good record of:
1) Thomas Jordan, of Pasbehegh & the Maine
2) Thomas Jordan (sr), of Warrosquoyacke
3) Thomas Jordan (jr), of Isle of Wight co VA
4) Margaret Jordan (sister of Thomas-jr) m: James Davis
voyage of "Diana" (1618 or 1619?)
As you're probably well aware, probably every census ever taken, contains errors in detail, due to failing memories, ...
The 1624/25 Muster is no exception.
Some passengers claimed to have arrived on the "Diana" in 1618; others claimed to have arrived on the "Diana" in 1619.
Thomas Jordan claimed to arrive on the "Diana", but didn't state what year.
Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, v88, pp 401-414, "Early Passengers to Virginia" (Avery E Kolb), clarifies discrepancies.
Diana arrived 1619, not 1618. (Actually, in Mar 1618/19)
From 1623/24 List, and 1624/25 Muster, we have no definite associations, to identify Thomas (1), with Thomas (2). However, Thomas Jordan (exact same name) of Warrasquioake appears just 4 years after known record of Thomas, of Pasbehegh.
It seems likely that (1) & (2) are indeed the same person.
Warrosquoyacke co was an original VA county, 1634; in 1637, it was renamed Isle of Wight co; the 2 names are the same place.
From proximity and association with Davis family, 3 & 4 can be tentatively assigned as children of 2.
There may be better document available, which I have overlooked.
In particular, I vaguely recall a document, which named Thomas Jordan of Chuckatuck (3, above), as the son of Thomas Jordan the elder.
But I'm unable at the moment, to find this document, if it exists.
Timeline for Thomas Jordan (sr), generated from these:
~1600 - born (parents unknown)
Mar 1619 - arrived at Jamestown, aboard Diana
1623-25 - served as soldier, at Pasbehayes / The Maine
1629,32 - served as Burgess, Warrasquioake
after 1625, before 1633 - married (spouse unknown)
1634 - son Thomas (jr) born
1635 - granted land at Warrasquioake
before ~1637 - dau Margaret born
by Nov 1637 - died at Warrasquioake (IoW co VA)
Note:
Daughter Margaret may have been older or younger than son Thomas (jr).
Is father of Thomas Jordan (jr) identified correctly, as Thomas (sr)?
It occurs to me, that since C&P (in general) offers only abstracts, we might find more answers in the original Virginia Land Books.
For example, in C&P v2 p358, the abstract for Samuel Jordan states only:
"Samuel Jourdan, Gent, an Ancient Planter, 450 acs, Chas City Co, 10 Dec 1620, (Patent Book #8), p 125."
The complete record (one of the few presented in C&P) states that he was in Virginia for 10 years, names his wife, ...
Perhaps the complete record for Thomas Jordan contains similar information? If, for example, Thomas had lived in Virginia for 16 years, when he was granted land in 1635, then we could infer that he had arrived in 1619, and was indeed the same person, as Thomas Jordan of Pasbehegh.
Also, the fact that Thomas (sr) died (1637) so soon after Thomas (jr) was born (1634), agrees with the small size of his family - just Thomas (jr) and Margaret are known. (No other aunts or uncles appeared at any of the weddings of the sons of Thomas (jr).)
Assuming we have properly identified the father of Thomas (jr), then we know that Thomas (sr) married SOMEBODY between 1625 (when he is single) and ~1633 (his son was born 1634).
Perhaps a single lady, who was already in Virginia, in 1625? More likely, perhaps, someone who arrived later.
Regards,
Dale Bryan
