James,
Harris G.Joplin was the Joplin that Joplin,Missouri was named for. Harris G.Joplin was the son of Mark & Amy Gilliam Joplin. Harris was born Wake Co,N.C. about 1810. After his father Mark died he when to Gibson,Co,Tn where he entered the Tennessee Conference in 1829. HE was transferred to the Missouri Conference in 1831,and stationed on the Hot Spring circuit in Arkansas; 1832 Creek Indians; 1833, Greene circuit; 1834 Washington ; 1835 and 1836, Greene circuit again. He located in 1837, haveing married Miss Simms, settled on a small stream near the Indian Nation,which took its name from him,and transfered it { his name } to what is now one of the largest cities in the Southwest Missouri. He re-entered the Conference in 1845 and traveled Naeosho circuit two years. The next year he was among the Indians again,but his fourth and fifth years were spent on the Springfield circuit ( formerly Greene } in 1848and 1849. His appointment in 1850 was Osceola. In 1851 he located againand died the next year.

Harris G.Joplin is my 3rd great grand uncle. There our many of descendant still liveing.
I hope this help you to understand who was Harris G.Joplin and how( our last name Joplin} his name became to be the one that replace Murphyville,Missouri to JOPLIN,MISSOURI.
I don't no who J.A. Joplin could be but he not a brother of Harris G.Joplin.
