VA Joslin, Joplin, Patterson, Patteson Families
We all know about the difficulty in accurately transcribing some names written in the script of many old documents. I really need some help sorting out the Joslin/Joplin (especially the Joplin, since I am of the Joslin) families in early Amherst Co., VA and the Patterson/Patteson families in early Buckingham Co., VA. Abstracts involving the Joslins and Joplins often confuse them. I have very little about the Patterson/Patteson family(families) as yet.
These distinctions are important because I recently made a possible connection between a child of Joslin ancestry named Patterson and a possible maiden name for his grandmother.
I am descended from John (Sr.) and Dinah Joslin ---> John (Jr.) and Catherine Joslin. Catherine's maiden name is not yet known. I'm wondering if it could be Patterson/Patteson.
The following was figured from "The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia, 1761-1807 and Albemarle County, Virginia, 1748-1763" by the Reverend Bailey Fulton Davis.
The Joslins moved from Amherst Co. VA to Lincoln Co., KY in the 1780s. John Joslin, Sr. sold his land in Amherst Co. at that time. The land is in the area of Owens and Elk Island Creeks.
Here is my evidence for a Joslin/Patterson connection:
1.) John Jr. and Catherine (unknown) Joslin had, among other children, a son named John P. and a daughter Mary Lucinda (m James Drummond) who named one of her sons Patterson. I wonder if Patterson was named for his mother's grandfather, Catherine Joslin's father?
2.) On 6 Jul. 1778 Chas and Mary Patterson of Buckingham Co. sold land (500 acres on S side of Berry's Mt. and S side Rucker's Run. This land is near that of John Joslin Sr., his daughter Elizabeth Evans, and that of the parents of his daughter-in law, Sally Proffitt Joslin, wife of his son William Joslin. So the land is effectively in the thick of Joslin country) to Jno Jopling of Amherst Co. The land was originally granted to Saml Spenser, Sr. (10 Sep 1755) and conveyed to Chas and Mary Patterson 20 Apr 1765 (as a wedding gift from Mary's father, Saml Spenser, I gather) Witnesses were Edmd Winston, Wm Spenser, Wm Horsley, and Chas Irving.
Then 6 Oct 1783 Jno Jopling of Burke Co., NC, sold the land to Jno Edmonds Jr., Amherst Co. Witnesses were Jas Pamplin, Wm Horsley, Jno Penn, Matt Tucker, and Wm Coffey.
The abstracts say Joplin, but given that they often mix up the Joslins and Joplins, I think it is as likely the deeds involved John Joslin as John Joplin.
The land lies near other properties connected to the Joslin family.
It should be noted that Pamplins and Horsleys were frequent witnesses for definitely John Joslin, Sr. land transactions. I have not noticed them in the definitely Joplin transactions.
Counter evidence:
Now, I gather most Joslin researchers think this Jno Jopling of the above deeds was just that, of the Joplin family. And there is a John Joplin who remained in Amherst Co.,Va after my Jno Joslin, Sr. and Jr. moved to KY. Land transactions involving John Joplin after John Joslin Sr. and Jr. went to KY are in the area of Treble Falls Creek, S fork Rockfish and Dutch Creek.
But, I wonder if John Joslin, Jr. might have owned this land in his own right, independent of this father's land? Given the similarities of the old p and s, it is no wonder abstracts of the old deeds often get the Joslins and Joplins mixed up. And John Joslin Jr.'s grandson's name is Patterson.
So... I would appreciate any help in sorting out the Joslin/Joplin and Patterson/Patteson families. I can account for the Joslins in Amherst Co and would be happy to share that information.
Thank you.
