Thanks very much for the explanation. That's very interesting, and you've given me some new information. But some of what you suggest conflicts with the account given by Adventurers of Purse & Person.
According to AP&P, the John Simmons who married Susanna Jones was a son of Benjamin Simmons (who was himself a son of the John Simmons who died 1749, the one who was the Burgess in IoW Co.)
"John [Simmons], born 23 Feb 1740, died 1801, married (1), (bond 29) Dec. 1761, Lucy Thorp, (2), (bond 12) June 1765, Susanna Jones, and (3), (bond 15) April 1779, Lucretia Jones."The reference source for the bonds is Catherine Lindsay Knorr, Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns of Southampton County, VA, 1750-1810.
John Simmons (d. 1749) did have a son John, but he was not the one with wife named Ann and son named William, nor the one with wife named Susanna who died in Warren Co NC in 1773.This John Simmons, according to AP&P, married Rebecca ___________ and left his will in Surry Co VA 19 April 1738.He did have a son William, but this William married Sarah Butts and left his will 1788 Southampton Co Va.
I can't immediately see a John Simmons in this family who fits the one you're looking for, or the one I'm looking for, but I do think they're probably all related, because William Kendall, who witnessed the 1773 will, seems to be related to the family of John Simmons (d. 1749).I haven't yet traced the relationship, but I'm working on it.This is all from the Mason section of AP&P, 4th ed., v. 2, pp569-635.
To explain why I'm interested in these families: I descend from the Paces of Prince George Co VA.Susannah Simmons (widow of John who d. 1773) sold land in Northampton Co NC jointly with Buckner Pace in 1777, and I'm trying to figure out how they came to own the land jointly.
The Lee connection seems a likely possibility.Buckner Pace, like earlier Brunswick Co Paces, had close associations with the Barlow family (descendants of John Barlow who died in 1728 in what was then still Surry Co VA).John Barlow and Hugh Lee Sr jointly patented 530 acres in Charles City Co (now Prince George), 29 April 1692 (VA Patent Bk 8, p.244)So there could easily be a connection somewhere there to explain why Buckner Pace and Susanna Simmons sold the land jointly. It may not be easy to find, however, as the parents and wife of Buckner Pace have not been identified.
More later, I hope.
