Joan,From an obituary sent in to Johanna's rootsweb site, from Shelia Hamlin Owens.....Obituary Published in "The Campbell Countian", A Quarterly Newsletter of the Campbell County (Tn) Historical Society, Vol. 11, No. 2, page 21, July, Aug, Sept 2000:
Death of aHighly RespectedCitizenof Campbell Co.On March 31 last, there died at the home of Capt. George W.Graham, near Big Creek Gap, in Campbell Co, one of the oldest and most noted men in this part of our state.Dr. John Jones.Dr Jones was born on Aug 9, 1803, near Wilkesboro, NC.While he was yet a young man he moved to Carter county, Tn, where he married Elizabeth Mozeley. He was brought up an ironmaker, and being of large frame and great muscular power, to see him working the iron forges of those days must have ben an impressive sigh to a person possessed of a romantic fancy. He was an ideal Tubalcain. The stalwart iron-worker, about the year 1827, moved to Campbell co, and for many years worked in Smith's forge on Davis creek, and in Queener's forge on Cove creekAbout the year 1850 he began the study of medicine, and in a few years thereafter, began the practice, and continued a practicing physician down to his death, always maintaining the reputation of a safe, conservative, and considerate physician, much devoted to his professiion. After the close of the war he wrote a valuable practical treatise on midwifery, which has been published, and greatly commneded. Dr. Jones was much esteemed by the people of Campbell co.He was elected a justice of the peace. In 1868, he was elected clerk of the county court, and was re-elected twice. He was very prominent in public affairs and always attended the meetings and conventions of the republican party, of which he was a zealous member. His majestic figure and lion like voice will be remembered by all who have attended the republican congressional conventions at Knoxville since the war."
There is another paragraph which mentions some of his children.Mary Jane
