ELIZABETH RHODA6 HELTON (JOHN5, JOSEPH4, BEACHAM3, THOMAS TOM LITHFUSS ORLEFUS CREEBECK2, UNKNOWN1 CHEROKEE) was born 1858 in Lumpkin County, GA. She married WILLIAM A. JONES, son of B. JONES and ELIZABETH. He was born 1858 in Union County, Ga.
Notes for ELIZABETH RHODA HELTON:
Elizabeth was living in Baxter PO, Union County, GA in 1907 when she filed Application 10182 Guion Miller Roll. She was the Aunt of 9876 and sister of 10181 Caroline McKinley. Affidavit with Application: Answers of Elizabeth Jones to the Commissioner of Eastern Cherokee Indians Claims on App 10182 Baxter, Union County, GA
I claim my Cherokee Blood through my Father. I do not know the date of my father's death he was a very old man. He was known and recognized in the community in which he lived as being part indian and part white. I do not know whether my grandfather lived with the tribe or whites when my father was born. My grandfather's name was Joseph Helton. I do not know the place of birth. I think it was Georgia or NC. I do not know whether he lived with Indians or white people. My information has been that he was recognized as being an indian in the community where he resided.
I do not know whether or not my father or grandfather ever received any land or money on account of having indian blood. My father went to the state of Tenn when I was small and staid there until his death. I do not know whether or not my ancestors were ever enrolled. I do not know whether or not any of my ancestors took any part in the Cherokee tribal proceedings. I do not know whether or not they voted with the white people or not. I do not know where my parents and grand parents lived at the time the indians were driven west. I do not know why my parents or grandparents did not go with them. I have under stood that one of my father's sister went with them. (note: this would be Nancy Helton). My reasons for thinking that I am of the descent of the Cherokee Blood is as follows. My Mother always told me so and old people who knew my grandfather say he was a Cherokee Indian. I never heard as I remember of a treaty the government made with the Indians in 1835 till lately. I know nothing about it. I and my mother lived in George and father in Tennessee if living at all in 1882.
Elizabeth Helton Jones lists Her father's siblings as Aleck Helton - died @1870; residence TN; she lists Nancy Helton (moved to IT); Thomas Helton who lived in TN and died around 1865; and Joel Helton of Lumpkin County, GA.
