I'll trace you down to my late (rather late, I never knew him) grandfather, Jimmie C. Jones...
The earliest known record is said to exist in a Bible taken to Utah by Susan Potts 1852-1920, who converted to the Mormon faith, leaving Brogden, Wayne Co., N.C., she was wife of Matthew Mile(s) Jones 1844-1914 and daughter of Newman Potts 1819-1844 and of the Urban Potts family tree. The Potts home still stands. As to the dates, they are to the best of my knowledge and current research.
To start...
Jethro Jones 1758 England - 1790 Unk. married Juanita Galloway (Wynetta sp?).You'll find him on the Dobb's (Wayne) county Rev. War listing. They begat:
Powell Jones (indicated in family lore, look for matching naming convention with his family - found in Alabama)
Benjamin Bryant Jones 1788 VA - ?
Benjamin married 24 May 1813 Johnston Co. NC to
Nancy Capps of Johnston Co. 1790 -1855 (she sprouted of the William Capp(s)/Bulls/Johnston Co. Talton's line.Interestingly, William Capp(s) is named on a marker in Williamsburg, VA as being a member of the First Assembly. This line also links Fly family line among others of Jamestown - also, see Isle of Wight County, VA.
Nancy Capps Jones lost her life, along with daughter Allie Mariah Jones, in a forest fire - according to family history. The Wayne Co. Library holds no newpaper info for 1855.)
Benjamin 1788 Jones and Nancy begat:
Polly1814-
Benjamin Bryant Jr. 1818-
Mathew Mile Jones Sr. 1822-1903 Seven Springs area, NC(Mathew Sr. lost one eye in a "rough and tumble" as brutal matches were called in the day... OR in a sword fight, take your pick, as recorded by his granddaughter.)
William Green Jones 1824-
Allie Mariah Jones 1830-1855
and Philip Jones 1817 Sampson Co.
Philip 1817 married Mary Benson you've written of. (If you have any info at all on Mary or her family of Johnston Co., I'd love to take a look) Married 27 Sep 1837 Johnston Co.
Philip 1817 and Mary begat:
Bettie Elizabeth -
Benjamin Bryant 1838-1810
Charles 1841 (buried near Kenly Elem. Sch., NC)

Martha 1853-
and Philip Elven Jones (not Philip B.)1846-1919

Pennie E Jernigan 1851-1899 (an interesting line)
Philip Elven and Pennie's headstones may be viewed online, go to the GenWeb Project, Wayne County, Tombstone project, photos - Daly FWB Church. There are two Daly churches... he is the FWB.His broken stone has been replaced and photo submitted this week, thanks to cousin Stacy Jones of the Matthew 1844 Jones line.
Philip Elven Jones died in Trent, Lenoir Co., NC around the corner from Seven Springs, NC. Suffered chronic war ailment.
Philip Elven and Pennie begat:

and you guessed it, yet another Philip Jones 1881 - 1956 listed as born in Brogden. This is my g-grandfather. Philip later went by his middle name... Cephus, following the death of first wife, my g-grandmother Polly Howell (Pikeville Howells)and baby Jones in 1925.
Cephus, Polly and Cephus' second wife Glennie West Davis (2nd marriage for her as well) are buried in a field associated with Woods Grove Church, 2 miles north of Goldsboro, NC, Hwy13.The transcription on the GenWeb is wrong (sigh), though I am very greatful for the work they do!

A memorial service was held just the past evening of this mailing for Vera or "Aunt Vear" wife of Albert, she was the last of my grandfather's generation.
Till we are reunited.
That being said, regarding family research
I'll leave you with this old time tune...
"Remember me, when candlelights are gleamin',
remember me, at the end of a long, long day.
Tonight, well I'll be sweetly dreamin',
just to know, that you remember me..."
