probable ancestry of Enos JONES, Augusta Co., VA

The connection between Enos, the tenth listed child of Robert & Anne JONES of Gwynedd, Montgomery county, PA, and the Enos JONES of Augusta county, VA, where my JONES family has verifiable roots, remains somewhat circumstantial although the evidence I’ve found is now strong enough to make me confident in its accuracy. Besides being the only Enos JONES of that generation whose name has survived in the records generally available to the researcher (there was another born slightly later in New England but tidily accounted for in that region and yet another born in Philadelphia about a generation later who married Elizabeth POTTS), I came across a will abstract in Philadelphia county, PA, that seems to tie Enos to both Augusta county, VA, and Montgomery county, PA.

KRESS, CHARLES Whitpain. Co. of Phila. Cordwainer.
November 3, 1766. November 15, 1766.
Brothers: Frederick (Strausburg Germany); John George, (Neustad Germany); Conrad Arnold; Jacob Hilga. Stepson: Nicolous Young.
Stepdaughters: Elizabeth Hilga, Margaret Arnold.
Nephews: Peter Piston (Neusted Germany), Jacob Bream, (Cassel, Germany).
Nieces: sisters children (in Germany). Pennsylvania Hospital.
Poor of Congregation at Ephrata Lanc., Co. of Penna.
Friends: Thomas Fisher. (Bethleham Penna) George Merckle.
(Cocaluve, Lanc. Co.) Sophia Morier.
Execs.: Thomas Fisher (Bethleham), Melchior Wagener (Worcester) Enos Jones (Nurriton).
Wit: Saml. Evans, Saml. Coulston. N.328.
(Wills: Abstracts, Book N: 1763 - 1766: Philadelphia Co, PA. p 328)

Three names are important to our investigation here: Enos JONES of Nurriton (Norristown in Montgomery Co., PA) which places Enos there in 1766; Samuel COULSTON who I believe was the son of William COULSTON and his wife, Ann RHOADS, half brother of Anne (COULSTON) JONES, Enos’s mother; and finally the name Sophia MORIER who I believe to be the mother of Enos’s wife, Sarah MAURER, later of Augusta Co., VA. Her full name was Anna Sophia and the common custom of the Germanic community was to use both given names together, i.e., Anna Sophia, which, unfortunately, leaves a small element of doubt, but taken altogether, I’m pretty certain this links Enos of Augusta county back to Robert & Anne JONES. The MAURER (or MOWRY as it later evolved) family also lived in this same area of Montgomery Co., PA, and the estimated ages of Enos & Sarah’s children would indicate they were already married by 1766. Finally, Priscilla (JONES) SILLINGS, the seventh child of Enos & Sarah lived long enough to be enumerated in the 1850 census for Augusta Co., VA, and her birthplace is given as Pennsylvania in 1770. (1850 US census, VA, Augusta Co., p. 212)

From this, I’m confident that Enos JONES, the youngest child of Robert JONES & Anne COULSTON, was born in Montgomery county (then still a part of Philadelphia county), PA, in December of 1737. There he grew to adulthood and was living in Nurriton or Norriton (Norristown today) in 1766 when he was mentioned in the will of Charles KRESS described earlier and probably at least as late as 1770 when Enos & Sarah’s seventh child was born. With perhaps a stopover in Loudoun county, VA, for a time where he apparently owned some land as late as 1778, he removed to a location near Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, about 1779 when a grand jury presented charges that he (and numerous others) had been retailing liquors without a license.

Hope this information is of some use to others researching this line. Jim S.
