John Burrows Jone, obit 1915-2006
John Burrows Jones
JOHN BURROWS JONES 1915 - 2006 Was born September 10, 1915 in Spokane, Washington. John became a sergeant in the famed 45th Division during World War II, serving under General George Patton and was involved in the North Africa campaign and the Anzio Beach Landing in Italy. While in Europe, John met his future wife, Anne Faerber, in Alsace, France. Although they only knew each other for four days, they were compelled to correspond after the War ended. Anne came to California after receiving a round trip ticket from John - if Anne had decided against marriage, she had a ticket home (To the retrospective delight of her children,) she decided to stay and marry. They settled in Alameda and raised four children. John was preceded in death by Anne who passed on December 13, 1968. He never remarried saying he could never meet another woman as wonderful as Anne. After her death, he eventually retired and traveled extensively through Europe and Canada, returning to Anne's birthplace of Obermodern in Alsace to reconnect with her family. In his later years, John loved to read, voraciously devouring murder mysteries. This was accompanied by an almost equal love of very good Scotch. John continued to live in the house he and Anne had shared with their children since 1960. He was extremely independent and razor sharp until the end. He peacefully passed away at home on Saturday February 25, 2006. John is survived by his children Rick (Jennet) Jones, Diane (Bob) Johnson, Dottie (John) Finnell, Lori (Hal Vanderlaan) Jones, grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) Larson, Caroline Jones, Adam Jones and great grandchildren Miranda and Kyle Larson. He is also survived by family in Oregon, Washington and nieces and nephews in France. There will be a visitation for friends and family on Thursday March 2nd from 5 pm to 8 pm at Greer Family Mortuary 2694 Blanding Avenue, Alameda. The family requests that donations be made to the City of Alameda Library or to the Alameda Food Bank. Burial will be private. For further information please call Greer Family Mortuary at 865-3755.
