Dear Sandra,
The JONAS ridge could also be named after Simon Jonas as
well. The 1790 Census lists a Jonas, Jno. and a Jonas,
Simon. I have been doing some research in NC on my husband's ggg-grandfather who stated in the 1850 Missouri
census that he was born in NC circa 1812-1814 and there is so much confusion about the JONAS's during that early time.

The research I have dug up John Jonas is particularly confusing as there was a John JONAS, and another called
"Little John" JONAS Jr. Now, I don't profess to have the right answers and this information I have I have found on the internet, so it is to be taken with a grain of salt in there.

I found a John JONAS who married a Fanny LORE on 30 Aug 1810. I have found several name combinations for Fanny, Euphronia is one. John and Fanny had two children one named John (yet another John) born 9 Jun 1818 and a Daniel JONAS born 10 Dec 1824.
"Little John" was born about 1790 in Burke County, NC and died around 1864.
Other tibits of information are in the history of the JONAS family in North Carolina. Such as John JONAS, Jr. was bound out to a man by the name of Jacob FYE and lived with an uncle John Killian JR according to the 1800 Lincoln County Census, page 876. This was posted by a KILLIAN ancestor.
Simon JONAS was born about 1720 in Palatinate Germany and died about 1798 at JONAS ridge in Burke County NC, but it shows 1803 in Catawba County, NC. He had 3 children
a female unknown name born about 1740, a Mariah Barbara JONAS born 1745-1749 and a John Jonas born about 1750 in Rowan, NC.
Now court records show that John JONAS was bound by a NC court in Lincoln County in 1791 to keep the county free of maintenance of a bastard child by Catherine MINGES. Also ordered by the court in the same year for another child with Mary KILLIAN. In the 1790 Census he did not appear to be married and had 9 slaves listed. A descendant Gene KILLIAN states John never married and his estate was divided amongst Andrew, Daniel, and Mollie KILLIAN, William WHITTENBURG Sr, and his son John. But, I am
confused as to which John JONAS this is, the one born in 1750 or the one born in 1789?

Now some of what I am stating is merely theortical on my part, mostly just posing questions so again do not take for fact.
*John may or may not have married Mary KILLIAN, (I am still looking) and was sued by Mary for child support for a bastard child-If so is John JONAS, Jr, this child, if so,
why does he have the JONAS surname? Was it customary to give the child the surname anyway to protect the mother?
Other information I have found states a John JONAS, Jr, born 1789 in NC was bound to Jacob FRY who died before 1801, and then in 1805 John asked the court for John KILLIAN to be his guardian and apparently John KILLIAN Jr.
had no children

Our family is trying to figure out if Jacob JONAS, my husband's ggg-grandfather is related to any of the JONAS family in NC at that time, so this is all conjecture on my part and the only reason I have thrown out all this extra information is I was hoping in your research of JONAS ridge you had come across any other JONAS surnames that might have some bearing on our research. I do hope you forgive me for rattling on with stuff that may or may not have anything to do with your research, but I am searching for any little tidbit of information to help with our addicting hobby.

Thank you,
Donna Jonas
