Elva Jolley was my mother and she is descended from the Jolliffe (pronounced Jolly) family which came to VA c. 1652 as exiles from the English civil war c. 1640-1650. They were mostly on King Charles I & II side in the war, Thomas Jolley of Cofton Hacket being high sheriff of Worcester attended Charles I to his execution. A couple years later he supported Charles II in a failed attempt to reestablish the royalty at the battle of Worcester. In 1660 the parliment restored the royalty and Thomas Jolliffe returned to England and was restored in his vast holdings and position. His son John remained in VA. John Jolliffe m. Mary Rigglesworth. Most of the "Jolley" families come this family although there are a few others too. The branch I am from went from VA to NC and TN and then became Mormons and you can follow them to UT.

The branch from John & Mary's firstborn became prominent in Winchester, VA, were wealthy with many lawyers in the family, slaves, and later in the early Quaker history (Hopewell meetings) and renounced slavery. There is a book on the history of this family at Heritage Quest. John Jolliffe, a Ohio lawyer, represented fugitive slave Margaret Garner in the longest, most expensive trial under the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Margaret Garner's story was the inspiration of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize novel "Beloved" which was made into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover, which are mostly fictionalized. A thorough history of Jolliffe and the Garner case is published in "Modern Medea".

You can find this family's genealogy at the family history library of the Mormans going back to 1500.
