Susan, my bestfriend is hot on the trail of trying to track down my grandfather's family. My great, great grandfather's name was John "Johnny" Joines and he married a woman named Christianah Nix. One record said he was born in Georgia about 1821 and another says Tennessee. Regardless, he moved to Lincoln Tennesse and he's on the census listed in that county in 1860, 1870 (listed as Joins) and in 1880.
My great grandtather was Rufus Franklin Joines (married Mary Elenel "Lemmie" L Stewart ) and they lived in Lincoln. Co. TN. His son, my grandfather, and later my mother, were also born in Lincoln Co. TN. My grandfather is also found on the census rolls in Oklahoma in 1920 (as a lodger, meaning he probably stayed with a family member -- again, per the research of my bestfriend). In 1930, they were back in Lincoln. They are also noted from time to time in census records as Joins.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you realize a connection. I'm trying really hard (well, really my bestfriend is doing all the fruitful work) to find the lineage of my grandfather and to verify family lore that they were part Cherokee Indian. Thanks!!
