Sarah Johnson/Johnston/Johnstone

Sarah Johnson is the mother of two known children: Mary E., who wed Joseph Bookstover. Mary appears to have we first James Blakemore, by whom she had two known children. And my direct line, Rebecca who married John W. Doyle in Marshall County.,(West) Virginia on October 27, 1850.

James M. Blakemore and Mary can be found in the 1850 census for Marshall County, (West) Virginia, as can Sarah and Rebecca. On the 1850 Marshall Census, Sarah and Rebecca are listed as Johnstone through, but the e could be an interpreters’ addition.

Sarah is 53 at the time of the 1850 census. By 1860 Sarah is listed with her deceased daughter’s family, John W. Doyle and children, and she is 63 years of age with her last name spelled Johnson.

Sarah does NOT show up again in any following census, although, I do have John W. and family from 1870 through the rest of the federal census.

On the obituary of John W. Doyle, Rebecca’s, Sarah’s daughter, last name is Johnson. The obituary was written by her children.

Rebecca died in Randolph, Illinois, 6 weeks after the birth of her last child, on February 1858; Sarah continued to live with John W. Doyle and family, as far as I can figure out, until her death.

In the Ohio County, Virginia marriage records, there are listings of a Sarah Fisher who wed Joseph Johnston in 1819 and Sarah Lindley who wed Benjamin Johnston in 1824.

Could one of these Sarah’s be my stalwart grandmother, who weathered losing her husband and raising her family by herself? Then continued to raise her grandchildren, under the watchful eye of her son-in-law, until her death?

So here finally is my question: does anyone know this Sarah Johnson, and her history?

Thank you,
Linda Brown
