MS Johnstones in Lafayette Co.

I am following, with interest, the discussions on the MS Johnstone discussion list, but it's giving me a migraine!

My frustration is that the earliest I can track my Johnstone roots to are in the early 1800's and they just appear "out of nowhere" in Lafayette Co., MS. A book of local Pontotoc County MS history lists the family of Charles William Johnstone ( my great Grandfather). It says he was born 6/22/1860 (probably in Lafayette Co.) His parents were William Chapman Johnstone and Emmaline Jane King Johnstone. William Chapman Johnstone was born 11/6/1833 (it says "evidence suggests he was born in AL and that his parents were Abel and Ruth S. Johnstone and that they moved to Lafayette Co. sometime before 1850") Probably because they are listed on the Lafayette Co. Census of 1850.

Emmaline Jane King was born in SC, 6/10/1832, and her parents were listed as Harry and Jane E. King. But I can't find ANY of these people anywhere!

My great great grandfather, William Chapman Johnstone, had two children, Charles William and Roxana (who married a James Robert Coleman). During the Civil War, the book says William C. was a member of Co. A, Mississippi Infantry, Lafayette Rebels, but I can't find a listing of this anywhere, either. He was enlisted 3/15/1862 and was sent to Corinth, MS, attached to General Chalmers brigade. He died in Corinth, on or about 5/25/1862 and "family tradition" states he was buried possibly at Shiloh Battlefield.

HIS father, Abel Johnstone is buried in Dallas Cemetary in Lafayette Co., MS and the dates on his headstone read born August 9, 1803, and died November 4, 1878.

I can't find ANY Abel Johnstones or Johnstons anywhere... AL or otherwise!

Any suggestions or input would be appreciated

Beth Johnstone Anderson

p.s please put Johnstones in the subject line if you e-mail me, so I won't think it's junk mail!!
