At the Battle of Sherrifsmuir, it is reported that upon the death of his son, Sir John ordered his unarmed, untrained relatives to flee to the hills, as he did. Unable to return home and face trial as a 'traitor', Sir John concealed himself in Eninburgh, where he died 1724. Many of his retainers were captured and killed, but those for whom there was 'expectation of ransom' were "Barbadoized", sent to Ulster or America. Known captives include: John Johnson, Jacobite prisoner, 1716 James Johnston, Jacobite prisoner, 1716 William Johnson, Jacobite prisoner, 1716 Page 14 Quaker George Johnston was deported after paying the fine.
