Hi again, Jill!
In Canada I am able to trace back as far as Benjamin Hardcastle in a family tree.Yes, he was the first postmaster of Port Carling. My dad says he recalls stories of Benjamin walking from Port Carling to Bracebridge (about a 20 minute drive today by good highway) every week to get the mail.
Benjamin had four sons: William Joseph, Robert Hardcastle (2nd born), Benjamin Jr. and Garry. We know they came to Port Carling from London, Ontario (1866).We don't know who Benjamin Hardcastle married, but suspect the last name may have been Taylor as this turns up as my grandfather's middle name.(My grandfather was BHJ's grandson.) We think that his wife either died in Ireland before he came to Canada or when he was in London, Ontario.
Sadly, Benjamin Jr. died when only 18 years old. Robert Hardcastle Johnston married Ismay James and had 6 children, my grandfather, John Johnston, being one of them.Another one of their sons, William James Johnston, together with his uncle, William Joseph, invented the Disappearing Propeller Boat, a really big deal in it's time (early 1900's).More details are contained in a book called "The Greatest Little Motor Boat Afloat".
Would love to share information that I have and find out more about the Johnston's from the UK.
Cheers!
Kathy (nee Johnston)
