Jacobite Prisoners Transported to America-1716
At the Battle of Sherrifsmuir, it is reported that upon the death of his son, Sir John Johnson ordered his unarmed, untrained relatives to flee to the hills, as he did. Unable to return home and face trial as a 'traitor', Sir John concealed himself in Edinburgh, where he died in 1724. He lies in the burial-place of the Johnstons in the church-year of St. Nicholas.
Many of his retainers were captured and killed, but those for whom there was 'expectation of ransom' were "Barbadoized", sent to Ulster or America. Known captives include:
