Have you ever noticed that the history of the 1st Marquee of Annandale, William Johnstone's life is well documented except for the last six years of his supposed life (1716-1721).This was the focus of my research. The 1st Jacobite Rebellion began in 1715, after the Hanoverian Government took control. This would change everything for the Annandale Johnstones as well as many other nobles. The 1st Marquee was now caught in the middle of trying to appease the new government and the Jacobies; an art that he had done quite well up to this point. This can be seen very well in the Montgomery Plot of 1690.But, before we continue, it is important to understand just how Annandale gained so much power from so many different monarchs.William Johnstone and the Annandale family were in the shipping business. This is abundantly obvious from his coat of arms which have two large anchors on it.Additionally, there are letters to the 1st Marquee concerning this business. The different Kings and Queens that would rule during the time of Annandale all had the same problem. They were cash poor, a noble who could give them money would gain power and be forgiven of mistakes made. This is exactly what Annandale did. But, after the death of Annandale's first wife, Sophia Fairholm Johnstone in 1716, the Jacobite pressure became too much in Scotland. It became so bad that the 1st Marquee had to leave Scotland and began renting in and around London. He would live with a woman named Ann Harris and they would have a child. This is documented in court cases of the 1720's between Ann Harris and the Marquees second wife Charlotte Van Lore Vande Bempde Johnstone. MORE LATER.
