Since I sent that query, I think we've tracked down at least part of William's family. He appears to be connected to two Johnston/Johnson families in Elgin Co. Ontario, Canada. One appears to be the John Johnston family who came from Ireland about 1825/6 and his wife Margaret Johnson presumably the dau. of George and Harriet Johnson from Armagh and Monaghan, Ireland.George and Harriet did not immigrate, but most of their children did, some coming before 1820.I haven't been able to confirm this information yet, so I can't really publish it.The Elgin Co. Genealogical Society has a nice website which provides much of the cemetery and census information for the early years of Elgin Co. as well as some links to other hepful pages. That is where I'm finding most of my information. The webmaster is a Johnson/Johnston descendant, so he has been a tremendous help.
William married Maranda Lucas in 1848.Her parents are John and Eliza Lucas and they appear to have come from elsewhere in Canada to Elgin Co. about 1840 (at least I haven't found any records for them before that date.)I also haven't found their burial records in Elgin Co. so I'm assuming they may have moved on at some point after 1850.One distinguishing character of both the Johnston and Lucas families is that their records are found for the most part in the Anglican churches of Elgin Co. rather than the more populous Methodist church in that area.
