Descendants of William Johnston
Generation No. 1
1.WILLIAM1 JOHNSTON
Notes for WILLIAM JOHNSTON:
The connections between Tillman and Johnston/Johnson familes may help or mislead. John and James Johnston / Johnson were sons of William and Jane Johnson who lived near the Lancaster Co and Kershaw Co SC line on Cedar Creek. They were born in the 1780s or early 1790s. Not much info is available on them at this time.
1808, Feb 15: The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research SCMAR, Vol. XV, Winter 1987, No. 1, p.37
At a meeting and sitting of the Court of Equity in and for the united Districts of Kershaw, Lancaster, Richland, Fairfield and Sumter, at Kershaw Courthouse, on Monday 15 Feb. 1808. Mr. Blanding presented the petition of John Johnston praying to be appointed Guardian of Adin Tillman, to have the care of the person and the management of the estate both real and personal of the said infant; it is so ordered upon the said John Johnston giving security and Letters of Guardianship issue accordingly. [Note: Adin would have been ca 13 or 14 years old.]
1815, July 13 (I, 45): Adin Tillman of Kershaw District sold to John Johnston of Kershaw District 150 acres on Bear Branch, bounded at the time of survey by lands of Andrew McKine and at present by lands of Thomas Anderson (east), Thomas McDonald (northwest), and the Catawba Company (west). Originally granted to Patrick Glaze. Witnesses: Huneman Blanbrook, John Rodgers. Proved 11 Nov 1817 by William Johnston JP.
1817, July 19 (Kershaw H, 392): John Johnston of Lancaster District to Adin Tillman of Kershaw District, 85 acres, for $1000, on the branch waters of Beaver Creek, surveyed for the Catawba Company, adjoining lands of Isaac Knox, George Hays, land surveyed for Adam McWillie, Alexander Archer, Ephraim Clanton, and Robert Lee. Witnesses: James Johnston and Jincy Tillman. Proved the same day by James Johnston before Wm Johnston JP in Lancaster District.
1817, Sept 1 (Kershaw I, 115-116): Adin Tillman (wife Rebecca) together with Robert William (wife Mary); James R Lowry; John Jenkins (wife Anna); and Jesse Pope (wife Margaret) sold to Isaac Knox 311 acres, one-third of the estate of James Turley divided among his sisters. Witness: Jacob Cole. (Note FWIW: The witness was a deacon of the Baptist church.)
John Johnson's ward Adin Tillman [ca 1794--ca 1852] married ca 1822 Rebecca Turley, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Hiatt) Turley, of Kershaw District. Elizabeth Turley mentions "my three grand children James Tillmon John Tilmon & Elizabeth Tilmon" in her LW&T of 1837. He moved to Jackson Co, GA. According to Gregory Allen Rymer (10 Mount Pleasant Estates Mineral Wells, West Virginia 26150), Adin was a son of William Tillman (b ca 1770) who was a son of John [1730--1787, VA] and Millicent (White) Tillman.
1819, Jan 20 (I, 138): Mary Tillman and Rebecca Tillman to John Johnston 200 acres on both sides of Camp Creek, formed from several older tracts, including land granted to Jesse Tillman. Bounded by lands of John Brown and James Crenshaw on the south, James Deas on the north, M D Tillman on the west, Witnesses: James Johnston and Gincy Tillman.
1826: Court of Equity decided in 1826 William Thompson & wife vs John Johnston and wife. The defendant obtained from the complainant's wife a release of her share in a tract of land after her mother's death, but in 1819 she was not of age to sell. The will left certain property to the widow who was to raise, school, and educate the children; so, she could not charge rent for board. The complainant is to receive payment for the lease of "John" from 1803 to 1819 at the rate of $40 per year. Jincy Tillman was a posthumous child and entitled to ¼ part of the hire of Negro John plus interest. Also, ¼ . . . (illegible) at the time of testator's death, from 1800-1819. Defendant is allowed to retain the part of the . . . in this case.
If I am really looking at the same John Johnson, there is a suggestion that either Mary Tillman or Rebecca Tillman became the wife of William Thompson and that Thompson sued because she was a minor in 1819. Note that he sued John and his wife. Was she, then a Tillman. Curiously, James Johnston and Gincy Tillman witnessed in 1819. James later married one Gincey D. surname unknown. Did brothers marry sisters?
Was Jincy a nickname for Jane??
