Alice, Here is what I have...
John Johnston (b. abt 1775 in Washington Co. AL) was the son of John Johnson (Sr) and Jane Powell. He married Jane Bettis and had 6 children (John P., James, Daniel, Ann, Mary and Agnes). My direct relative is Agnes (b. 1827. AL), their youngest daughter.Itsounds as if your John P. Johnston is their first son.
I believe (but as yet cannot prove) that John Johnston and Jane Bettis lived in Alabama or Mississippi. Do you have any information that could shed light on this?
John Johnston was involved in relocating the Choctaw Indians to Indian Territory (OK)in 1831-1833. I think he may have been a U.S. Indian Agent or Sub-agent, but can find no proof of this.He did have the rank of colonel.
Sometime after 1840, Col. John Johnston married Mary Cheadle (Chickasaw Indian and widow of Lewis Walker, brother of the famous CHoctaw Chief Tandy Walker). They had four boys; their third son, Douglas Hancock Copper Johnston was to become Govenor of the Chickasaw Nation for forty years (1898-1939).
Col John Johnston died in 1865 and is buried at Ft. Washita Ok Cemetery.
If you have any corrections to my information or any additional information, I would be really happy to have it.Thanks!
