I have only been researching Allen for about ten years Ė but I too am stumped. Berry was my wifeís great-grandfather.
This is the first I have heard of Margaret being a second wife. Could you give me a reference for their marriage?
Can you give me references for the deeds associated with Allenís property? I havenít had any luck finding them in the Carroll County land records. I have also been told that there is no will or probate file for Allen Ė which I find very surprising.
The 1880 census states that both of Allenís parents were born in VA. From the 1850 census I have Allen and Margretís children as Berry, Alexander, Allen and Mary J. I think there is a good probability that James M Johnson listed as family 1398 on page 105B of that census is a brother to Allen Ė but if they are brothers I would expect some similarity between their childrenís names and I donít see any.
In the 1840 census it appears that Allen is enumerated in Carroll Co. on line 10 of page 34. There is a male listed in the household of age 15 but less than 20 and three males of age 5 but less than 10 years. If this is our Allen, there is a male of age 15 but less than 20 years and another male of age 5 but less than 10 years for which I cannot account in later censuses. Do you know who the males could be? Or is this perhaps not our Allen Johnson?
Because Berry was born in TN, Allen must have moved to TN before 1831. He also would have married before or during 1830. I havenít been able to locate Allen in the 1830 census. The most likely Allen Johnson I have found in the 1830 census is on line 20 of page 334 in Maury County. However, the ages of the children donít match with the ages of the known children of Allen. What have you found?
