JOHN R. JOHNSON
Was born January 10, 1843, in Red River County, Texas, and is a son of BALDA C. and MARY E. (MITCHELL) JOHNSON. Balda C. Johnson was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, and died in 1852 about forty-five years of age; his widow died in 1866, about sixty years old.
John R. Johnson was reared and educated in his native county, and in 1862 enlisted in Company H, Gould's regiment of cavalry, and served until the close of the war, taking part in many battles, including those of Mansfield and Yellow Bayon. In 1875 he married Miss Della J., daughter of J.R. Saunders, of Grayson county, Texas, and has had born to him four children, named-MARY, EMMA, JAMES and JOHN. Mr. Johnson owns 1,200 acres of the best land in the county, and is a large planter and stock grower, as well as one of the county's most substantial and progressive citizens. He is extremely popular, has been tax collector, and twoce elected to the office of high sheriff, and is a Knight Templar and a member of the Farmers' Alliance.
