Hello Nell (and Bonnie if you're still there)
I'm also a gggggrandson of Thomas and Catherine Hill Johnson, and have been trying to establish the connection between Thomas and John Johnson who married Jane Eldridge. It's pretty clear that John and Jane Eldridge Johnson migrated to Madison County, AL 1808-1810. Her father, Thomas Eldredge, and brothers apparently moved with them or at about the same time. They obtained adjoining tracts of land in what is now northern Huntsville, AL. The USGS cemetery survey shows adjoining Eldridge and Johnson Cemeteries on one of those tracts.
A Thomas Johnson also came to Madison Co. and obtained a land patent at about the same time. This is probably not our Thomas because he would have been only 16 or 17 at the time. The question is whether "our" Thomas Johnson was this other Thomas' son, or the son of John and Jane.
There may be original documents that could shed light on this. For example, the marriage of Thomas and Catherine Hill was recorded in Madison County. The 1830 census listed two pairs of John Johnson and Thomas Johnson's, each residing on evidently adjacent properties, although unclear where either were without enumeration maps. In 1832 Thomas and Catherine Hill Johnson sold property which was recorded.
According to one Johnson family account, Thomas, Catherine and family moved to Benton(now Calhoun)Co, AL about 1835. This does make sense in that their daughter, Nancy, apparently met and married my ggrandfather, John B. Loyd there. However, Thomas is reported to have died in Madison Co. in 1856. Again, which Thomas? I think the cemeteries may hold some answers to some of these questions if anyone is in a position to check. Since I live in Europe, I can't do it myself.
Am still searching, but will be very grateful for any additonal info.
Best regards,
Grady Lloyd
