The Old Johnson Graveyard-Frederick Co., VA.
THE OLD JOHNSON GRAVEYARD
This graveyard can be reached by turning left immediately at the top of the Double S on Rt. 50. It is on the right of the road leading from Trone, Bethel Church Cemetery in Frederick Co., Va. Although the graveyard above is still in Virginia, it is only a rifle shot off the West Virginia line in Hampshire Co. I list it since there are several from West Virginia buried there, that recently I have received inquiries about. The old graveyard is in a grove of trees, in a field where many cattle feed. They see to it that it is kept clean at present of weeds. They use the grove as a shield from the hot sun in the summer.
There are few inscribed graves. Most are of field stone. I shall give those known to be buried there.
JOSEPH JOHNSON and his wife Anna McGinnis. Joseph was born, (Bible record) on the 4th of December 1785; died January 6, 1854; married February 28, 1805. No inscribed stone of either, nor is it known which grave belongs to them, from the many other uninscribed stones.
ANNA MC GINNIS, his wife, born May 18, 1782; died August 20, 1864.
MARTIN POOLE, born February 14, 1814; died December 8, 1887; married March 21, 1836, Nancy, daughter of JOSEPH and ANNA JOHNSON; she was born 1819; died 1897.
JOSEPH POOLE, father of Martin, born ca 1786, Pa.; married Elizabeth (McGinnis) born 1782, Pa. This Joseph is the compiler's great grandfather on his grandmother's side. As to Elizabeth, wife of Joseph, Sr. I have placed it in parenthesis, since at the present I cannot say where I got the Information, as to her maiden name. She, whoever she is, lies her.
The Few Inscribed Stones
MARY M. MC COY, daughter of William dn Susan Davis McCoy, born November 22, 1842; died June 6, 1859.
MC COY INFANT, of William and Susan, died Feburary 1863.
DAVID JOHNSON, born May 24, 1780, died December 25, 1827. War of 1812.
There are at least 7 or 8 more graves here. At present no others are identified.
