Cliff, or others,
I am trying to resolve 2 pension files, both for Cornelius Johns(s). Both pension files were filed 19 July 1909 in Orange, FL (filled out by the county clerk - handwriting is identical).
One of the files lists Cornelius C. Johns age 71, born on 18 May 1838 in Alachua County, FL.. It states he has resided in Fl since 18th May 1839 (birth). It says he enlisted in Fernandina, FL under the name of Cornelius C Johns on 27 Feb 1862 in Company D, Regiment 2nd of the State of Florida Infantry. It further states he was honorably discharged at or near Appomattox Court House, VA., April 1865 during the surrender of Gen Lee.
Another file lists Cornelius Johns age 88, born on 1821 Ware County, GA.. It states he has resided in Fl since "I was a baby of six months" in 1822. It says he enlisted in Fernandina, FL under the name of Cornelius Johns in the fall of 1861 in Company E, Regiment 10th of the State of Florida Infantry. It states (like the above Cornelius C. Johns) he was honorably discharged at or near Appomattox Court House, VA., April 1865 during the surrender of Gen Lee.
Are these Father and Son? It would seem likely but I am not sure. I believe the second entry above "Cornelius Johns" is the Cornelius Johns that married Rebecca Sylvester and her Widows Pension File is filed with his pension application. Further, she stated he enlisted under the name of "C. Johns" on her pension file application. Also the birth dates seem to match other sources for him. However, his county of birth is listed as Ware County, GA which I haven't seen before.
Also, on the possible Son (first entry) born in FL in 1838. That date corresponds to when the Father moved from GA to FL. Given this; the fact they both lived Alachua and both enlisted in Fenandina, FL, it would seem very likely there is a relationship. However, I have never seen "Cornelius" in a list of children for "Cornelius C. Johns" and "Rebecca Sylvester".
So, if the above is true (Father and Son) then there would appear to be THREE Cornelius Johns' (Father, Son, and Grandson). Cornelius Johns b. abt ?1774? (Married Elizabeth Sparkman), then Son Cornelius Johns b. 1821 (Married Rebecca Sylvester) then Cornelius Johns b. 1838.
Do you have any info that clarifies this?
Thanks
Dave
