Isaac Johns is the earliest Johns I have in my line and don't have much information on him. I know he was in Pendleton Co, VA where a tract of 850 acres was granted to an Isaac Johns by patent, dated 9 July 1729. Don't know if this is the same Isaac as mine or not. There is also a tract of land granted to Isaac Johns by patent dated 9 July 1799, and this is also 850 acres. Looks to me as if this first listing might be a mis-reading of the date from 1729 to 1779, and the patent is the same. Just recorded in 2 separate places. Anyway, where he was before this is not known. Nor is the name of a wife, or wives, or anything about them. He had 8 or 10 children. The last 2, who were listed in his will, may have been grandchildren. By name they are Moses; William; Sarah; Zachariah; Jeremiah; James; Isaac; John; Mary and Elizabeth. I descend from both William and James, but have information on the others, as well, if you want it.
I have that Zachariah was born 1765 in Frederick Co, VA, and died before August 1857 in Rutherford Co, NC. He married Martha _?_. She was born about 1763 in VA and died between 1850-1860, possibly in NC. Zachariah moved his family to Rutherford Co, NC circa 1790 and settled in the fork of the Broad and Green Rivers. he purchased land and, by 1827, owned 750 acres, part of it in Polk Co, NC. He was a farmer and had slaves to help him work the farm.
Zachariah tried to enlist during the Rev. War was too young. Later on, he was able to serve but only for a couple of weeks. It is because of the brevity of his service that he was not eligible for a pension. In his will he lists only his wife and 2 sons, James & John. The children I have listed for them are:
. Elizabeth, may or may not be a daughter of Zachariah. Born about 17785; mar Robert McCray on 10 Apr 1799, Rutherford Co, NC.
. Rachel born about 1790, NC
. William L. born 1790-1800, NC. This might be the same Wm. Johns who married Elizabeth Easter on 23 Mar 1813, and then again it may not be. Don't you love these positive maybes?
. Jane b about 1800, NC; mar William Feagins on 29 Oct 1816, Rutherford Co, NC. Not sure if she is a daughter of Zachariah but she fits in here date-wise and, also, she married a Feagins boy as did her 'sister' Rachel. Just a guess, tho.

. John born 1804, NC; died 1878
It sure appears like a very good possibility we are working on the same core group here. Most of the family stayed on in VA with Isaac going to Ohio and Zachariah leaving for NC. In the next generation of the VA group, a lot of them ended up in Illinois.
