My Paternal great-grandmother was a Joachim. Her father emigrated to the United States in the late 1850's or 1860's from OLDERSUM, which was supposed to be a port town located on the North Sea (the German Empire was diferent then than today, and I need to look this up in an atlas).. Anyway, I was told that they were originally Castillion Spanish that had left Spain because of either military conscription or unrest. When pressed by Germany to serve in some sort of military service, they left Germany and arrived in America, and eventually settled in Cairo, Illinois. They were merchants.

There were 4 young brothers, with names like Gett, Girard and the unimaginative Joaquin Joachim. They travelled west as a family in the early 1870's and settled in the Santa Clara Valley, where they became farmers. My Grandfather's paternal Grandfaher, Girard Joachim, outlived 5 wives and sired a few children, who's progeny have scattered through the western states.
