Looking for Further Info on Philip, Bessie & Lizzie/Betty Shapiro & Dorugen II

I was wondering if anyone is related to Philip or Bessie Shapiro/Miller?

Philip was born in “Russia” circa 8 Jan 1875
Bessie was also born in “Russia” circa 29 Jul 1874. Died: 1951 in Long Beach, NY. Her maiden names on the kids birth certificates were: Wawelksi Wawelksi Vehyovisky Wavelski Velgovisky Williviksky Willivitsky Velgovisky Shapiro Miller

They legally changed their names to Miller in 1952.

They had 6 kids total, 2 of which died as babies.

Betty/Lizzie Shapiro/Kessler: Born in “Russia” circa 1892. Died 1951 in Long Beach NY.
Benjamin Shapiro/Miller: Born 13 May 1905 in Chicago, IL. Died: 19 Feb 1966 in Vienna, VA
Janice Clara/Claire Shapiro/Miller Friedman: Born: 27 Aug 1907 in Chicago, IL Died in the late 1990’s
Jacob/Jack Shapiro/Miller: Born: 19 Aug 1909 in Chicago, IL Died: 4 Nov 1990 in Miami, FL

Any help would be great. We are trying to figure out my Great Grandmother, Bessie’s actual Maiden name, Possible name changes when they came to the US and where they came from. We can’t find their names on the ship manifests via Ellis Island or Castle Gardens...or anywhere for that matter.

Was he naturalized citizen? Yes, I have all his Nat. papers attached to his name on my tree

Any draft registration form? Can't find it

When did he die? Do not know...I think it's between 1925-1930 in NY

Have you located his arrival manifest? Can't find him on anything from July 1897 in NY or MD...or anywhere else for that matter.

did Philip and Bessie marry in America or came married to America? They married in Russia, somewhere...don't know. They had a Daughter, Lizzie/Betty that came over with Bessie in 1904. Can't find those manifests either.

**Bessie was also born in “Russia” circa 29 Jul 1874. Died: 30 Jul 1951 in Long Beach, NY......
Was Bessie naturalized citizen? I don't know

If she had social security numbers than possible she put down a place of birth and parents names. No SS# that I know of for either Bessie or Philip.

*** Betty/Lizzie Shapiro/Kessler: Born in “Russia” circa 1892. Died 24 Aug 1951 in Long Beach NY.
Was she naturalized citizen? No place of birth on her marriage application and record? I can't find her marriage app/records/cert. She was married twice and I don't know her 1st married name, but there is nothing under Shapiro, Miller or Kessler(Harry-her 2nd husband) for her in NY, CT, NJ or IL.

Since your ancestor legally changed their surname to MILLER have you located that paperwork? I have, there's no application attached to the name change, it just lists their names from Shapiro to Miller, in 1955 in NY

Philip was born in 1875; Bessie was born in 1874 and Lizzie in 1895---they all came to America from Russia via Port of NY- Philip came on the Baltimore. I don't know which ship Bessie/Lizzie came over on...though.

It says on Philip's Nat. Papers that Bessie's name was Catherine Shapiro. He didn't declare children in 1903/1910....don't know why...they had 6 total, 4 survived.

I was also wondering if someone could tell me where Dorugen II, Russia was and is now. It was stated on my Great Grandfather's (Philip Shapiro's) Naturalization papers that he was born in 1875 in Dorugen II. I can't find anything about that town....It says that he immigrated on either 25 Jul 1897 or 13 Jul 1897 on the Baltimore to Port of NY, can't find anything on that either.

Are there any links that could tell me more about the area?

Thank you for your help,
Erica Hersh (Philip & Bessie’s Great Grand Daughter via Jack Miller)
