A few more comments and one correction.

First, the correction. I said that the Jewish reference concerned the granddaughter of Joseph HART, when in fact the grandfather's name was Joseph Anthony, son of Mark Anthony and Isabella Hart.

The Jewish reference is in Cooper material relating to Thomas Cooper (1733 NC/TN-1796 GA) and his wife Sarah (Anthony) Cooper (1742 Va-1796 GA). Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Anthony and Elizabeth Clark, through on to Mark Anthony.

A further comment on Jews in England. Jews were officially excluded by law from England from the 1200s to 1656, as stated. But it is clear that Jews did live in England before 1656, both in secret and openly. One of the methods to track these is to try to find 'denization' records. Denization was a special residency permit for people coming into England from other countries. While it is not always easy to spot Jews from these denization records, one of the characteristic flags is the terminology 'dirty and Egyptian', an English euphemism for the Jews. In essence, then, these denization authorizations were skirting the law, for whatever reason, bribery, royal Court pressure, etc. The Derrick Anthony [of the British mint] denization papers when he returned from Portugal called him, 'dark, dirty and Egyptian', a clear reference to his Jewish background.
