Hi Philip,

He was not adopted by the Lafenburgs, he was 23 and a farm laborer. His name at that time had been changed to Charles Brown. I checked the WI area for Seamans, and most of them were from Prussia. That was the spelling, but probably misspelled on the census. I'm not looking for him in any Jewish records....just trying to identify his parents.

My dad's cousin had a daughter who married a German. They also determined that he was Jewish, and that they left Prussia during a purge on Jews in the mid to late 1850s. It's been a major puzzle for over 30 years. Thanks.
