The spellings you showed -- Epley, Apley, Appley -- are not German, but English. After he came to America, your great-great-grandfather must have anglicized his name. Do you know what was his original surname? You stated that you "have reason to believe that [Elijah's] Grandfather ... was one of the German Jewish Families." What is your evidence for such a belief?
