Bob, Thank you for your reply. This ancestor of mine is listed as Epke Luuesz who was also known as Epke Lieuwes, born 1569 at Minnertsga,North Friesland,Netherlands. He is also listed as Epke Jacobsz. He started signing his name as Epke te Bonte because he had taken up residence at the Bonte farm. He's now widely known on the web as Epke Banta who was one of the very early New York settlers. I've been researching the history of Conversos/Marranos. I've seen the name Jacobsz on the list for Portuguese Jewish merchants. I see Jacobs as a Sephardic name and the history of the name Lieuwes or Luuesz is interesting too.

Below is some cut and pasting I've done in my search:

Some sources point out to the fact that some 90,000 Jews entered Portugal after their expulsion from Spain by the Catholic Sovereigns in 1492.

1557-1578 “Sebastian of Portugal” granted Jews freedom to emigrate in return for a fee of 250,000 ducats. Many decided to leave.

SEARCHING FOR CRYPTO-JEWS IN FRANCE: FROM SPANISH JEWS TO FRENCH HUGUENOTS by Abraham D. Lavender, Ph.D. Department of Sociology and Anthropology Florida International University, Miami, Florida from HaLapid, December 1996

There is increasing interest concerning where the overt Jews and crypto-Jews of Spain and Portugal settled after being exiled by the Inquisition. Morocco and other parts of North Africa, the Ottoman Empire, and Holland have been of major interest as Islamic or Protestant areas which did not have a Catholic Inquisition.
Even if one agrees that most Sephardim/crypto-Jews moved to Holland, the possibility remains that some members/descendants of the families remained in France. The fact that the community attempted to discipline "straying"members indicates that some individuals hesitated to return openly to the community. Recognizing individual differences, it also is unreasonable to believe that all exiles and their descendants were able to overcome the pressures of the ups and downs of Christian intimidation.

For a very long time, the Jews, with the exception of Cohen and Levy, did not have any family name and were referred to by their father's given name and sometimes also by their grandfather's such as Moses son of Abraham son of Moses.
When they were forced to choose a family name, as was the case in the French Empire in 1808, they often adopted their father's given name or sometimes their grandfather's. Hence the very numerous MOYSE, SALOMON, MAYER, LION, GOUDCHAUX, NATHAN....
Such given names becoming surnames are also found all over Europe, e.g. DAVID, MENDEL, JACOB,......
In Sephardic names coming from Spain or Portugal, it is possible to check that quite a number of them are the names of Spanish (FONSECA, ALMEIDA, MOLINA..) or Portuguese (PEREIRA, LAMEIRA...)cities.
False explanations. Excepting CREMIEUX, which is still enigmatic, let us signal a few erroneous geographical origins of surnames.. PICARD has nothing to do with Picardy, but comes from BICKERT or BICKHARDT. LYON is not related to the French city of Lyons, but to the Lion of Juda (see below).
The names of Jacob's twelve sons are often used as Jewish given names. It is for instance the case of Juda (=Yehuda), Nephtali, Issachar, and Benjamin. Now, in the Bible (Genesis 49), Juda is compared to a lion. For this reason, the given name Lion is very often used as an équivalent of Juda, it is called a kinnui of Juda. In written documents, the same man can sign indiscriminately Juda or Lion. Eventually, as said previously, these given names become family names LION ou LYON in France, LOEWE in Germany and possibly GARION / GOURION in North Africa.

And I believe I took these from Sephardic.com
