Sorry but it is not totally like this... My ggf did have a Khazar name (my family has made searches about it, but it wasn't necessary since we always knew it and this branch of the family looks Khazar). He was a Cohen, since my father was always told that, and both the parents of my father were Cohen or daughter of a Cohen (Cohen families often intermarry).
It is true that converts cannot be Cohanim but since the sons in law sometimes took the name of the wife when he was well known it's the explanation my family thinks of.
