The fact that your ggf had (what you suggest is) a Khazar name does not mean anything. Note the important part of his name - the fact that he was a cohen. We are told that the Khazars converted om masse to Judaism (or at the very least the cream of their society did). You should know that no one can be converted to being a cohen, so that no descendants in the male line of the khazars could be a cohen. Ergo, your ggf was not descended in the male line
from Khazars !
